Enter your step or porch height and we'll recommend the right ramp length.
Measure from the ground to the top of the highest step or landing.
A 1:12 slope means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. The bigger the second number, the gentler the climb. Gentler is always safer, so verify local building code before installing.
| Slope | Incline | Safe use |
|---|---|---|
| 1:12 | ≈4.8° | Independent wheelchair use. The ADA standard. |
| 1:6 | ≈9.5° | Steepest acceptable for an occupied chair or scooter, and only with a qualified helper. |
| 1:4 | ≈14° | Unoccupied transport only, with no one riding. |
Read the ratio as rise to length: 1:4 means every inch of rise needs 4 inches of ramp, so it climbs three times faster than 1:12. Some manufacturers write these same two slopes as 2:12 and 3:12, which are identical inclines in unreduced form.
Use the longest ramp your space allows and follow your equipment’s owner manual. A rise over 30 inches needs a landing or platform.
The American Access Big Lug is a modular aluminum ramp built for doorway thresholds, small curbs, and raised landings where width and stability matter most. With a full 42" wide deck and optional handrails, the Big Lug accommodates wheelchairs, walkers, and unsteady foot traffic alongside storm doors, screen doors, and patio doors. Available in lengths from 3' to 6', this ramp combines an 800 lb weight capacity with a fully adjustable modular design that assembles on site.
The Big Lug is engineered to provide a wide, stable path of travel in front of doorways and across small curbs. The 42" interior deck gives wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers ample clearance, and the matching 42" width works well in front of storm doors, screen doors, and patio doors. When handrails are added, the spacing between them is designed to maintain wheelchair and walker clearance without crowding the path.
The ramp comes with handrails to provide added support for users who need a little extra stability transitioning through a doorway. The handrails stand 34" tall and run the full length of the ramp on both sides, anchored with stainless steel hardware.
The Big Lug ships as a modular kit that assembles on site with a basic socket wrench. Channel-slot stringers let you slide handrail and leg bolts into position before tightening. Most installations take a single person under an hour. The included transition tread bridges the ramp surface to the threshold for a smooth roll-over.
Manufactured from high-grade aluminum with stainless steel hardware throughout, the Big Lug is built for everyday outdoor use. Unlike wood ramps, the aluminum won't rot, warp, or splinter, and unlike steel ramps, it won't rust. The non-skid deck surface is part of the aluminum extrusion itself, so it won't peel, wear off, or need refinishing.
