A ramp run on its own is only half of a modular system. The door needs a level deck to open onto, a run that changes direction needs a corner to turn on, and a long climb needs somewhere to pause. The PVI Modular XP Platform is that piece: a grooved aluminum landing with 4 in curbs, double-bar handrails and adjustable legs, offered in seven rectangular sizes from 48 in x 48 in to 72 in x 72 in and as 30, 45 and 60 degree turn platforms for a path that has to bend at an angle.
It is a component of a PVI Modular XP system, not a ramp, and it does not stand in for one: the ramp sections, and above a 26 in rise PVI's long leg supports, are separate items. PVI rates the Modular XP system at 100 lb per square foot as a distributed load rather than a single total, and its XP3 manual requires every landing to have at least one anchored leg on each of two opposite sides. PVI states that a system built with the needed platforms, legs and long leg supports accommodates rises up to 60 in; that is a system figure, not a rating of any one platform. The manual details the 48 in x 48 in, 48 in x 60 in and 60 in x 60 in bases; PVI lists the larger landings and the angled platforms without published footprints, so plan their space from the nominal size and ask before ordering if the site is tight.
Key Features
Seven rectangular landings: 48 in x 48 in, 48 in x 60 in, 60 in x 60 in, 60 in x 72 in, 60 in x 96 in, 60 in x 120 in and 72 in x 72 in, each supplied with its handrails.
Three turn angles: The 30, 45 and 60 degree platforms in PVI's price list let a run change direction where a square corner will not fit; PVI's web page points to the 45 and 60 degree versions for hard-to-reach landing areas.
Weights from 72 lb to 170 lb: PVI's brochure lists 72 lb for the 48 in x 48 in landing, 113 lb for the 60 in x 60 in and 170 lb for the 60 in x 120 in; the turn platforms have no published weight.
Exact footprints for the three base sizes: PVI's XP3 manual gives outside base dimensions of 50.375 in x 50.375 in for the 48 in x 48 in landing, 50.375 in x 62.375 in for the 48 in x 60 in and 62.375 in x 62.375 in for the 60 in x 60 in.
Legs in 6 in steps: Landing legs start at 12 in and step up by 6 in, and the deck can sit as low as 3 in above grade, per the XP3 manual.
Long leg supports above 26 in: Any landing set higher than 26 in needs PVI's long leg supports, two straps per side, which are a separate item.
Anchored and tied down: The manual calls for an anchored leg on each of two opposite sides of every landing, and a tie-down at all four corners wherever hurricane tie-downs are required.
Who It Is For
Any PVI Modular XP installation with a door in it, since the deck at the threshold is a platform. The 60 in x 60 in serves as a landing for 90 degree turns or resting and the 60 in x 96 in as a landing for 180 degree turns, which is the switchback that fits a long rise into a short yard. The angled turn platforms suit a path that must skirt a walk, tree or utility box at something other than a right angle. Facilities, churches and clinics planning a code-minded entrance will use several in one system; a short straight run that meets a stoop and needs no landing is the job of the PVI OnTrac instead.
Dimensions
Rectangular sizes and PVI brochure weights: 48 in x 48 in, 72 lb; 48 in x 60 in, 96 lb; 60 in x 60 in, 113 lb; 60 in x 72 in, 153 lb; 60 in x 96 in, 163 lb; 60 in x 120 in, 170 lb; 72 in x 72 in, 153 lb
Outside base footprint from the XP3 manual: 50.375 in x 50.375 in, 50.375 in x 62.375 in and 62.375 in x 62.375 in for the three smallest sizes; the manual builds its 60 in x 96 in and 60 in x 120 in landings from connected bases, and publishes no footprint for the 60 in x 72 in and 72 in x 72 in sizes
Usable surface: 60 in x 60 in and 60 in x 96 in, the full nominal size
Turn platforms: 30, 45 and 60 degree, with no published weight or footprint
Landing height: 3 in minimum; legs from 12 in in 6 in steps; long leg supports required above 26 in
Load: PVI rates the system at 100 lb per square foot
Measure the finished height of the threshold or deck the landing will meet, then the clear ground where it will sit, allowing for the outside base footprint rather than the nominal deck size and for the ramp sections that will join it; the total rise decides whether long leg supports are needed.
Installation
PVI's XP3 manual estimates about one half person-hour of assembly per landing base and lists saw horses, a ratchet with a 1/2 in deep well socket, a 1/2 in wrench, a cordless drill with a 1/4 in masonry bit and a #2 Phillips bit, a 5/32 in Allen wrench, a tape measure and a bubble level. Legs and assembly hardware are included with the 60 in x 60 in and 60 in x 96 in.
Check the landing deck, legs, posts, handrails and hardware bags against the manual's component list before starting.
Assemble the top landing first, since the ramp sections are set to meet it.
Choose leg lengths for the finished height, and fit long leg supports, two straps per side, on any landing above 26 in.
Add the landing handrail sections to the open sides and leave every fastener loose until the system is in place.
Locate underground electrical, gas and water lines, then anchor at least one leg on each of two opposite sides; use no concrete anchors in asphalt.
Where hurricane tie-downs are required, run one from each of the four corners to a ground anchor after the system is fully assembled in its final position.
Tighten all hardware, and inspect fasteners and anchors on a regular schedule.

Occupied (1:6)with helper5 ft.
Unoccupied (1:4)no rider4 ft.
A 1:12 slope means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. The bigger the second number, the gentler the climb. Gentler is always safer, so verify local building code before installing.
Why slope matters
Slope
Incline
Intended Use
1:12
≈4.8°
Independent wheelchair use. The ADA standard.
1:6
≈9.5°
Steepest acceptable for an occupied chair or scooter, and only with a qualified helper.
1:4
≈14°
Unoccupied transport only, with no one riding.
Read the ratio as rise to length: 1:4 means every inch of rise needs 4 inches of ramp, so it climbs three times faster than 1:12. Some manufacturers write these same two slopes as 2:12 and 3:12, which are identical inclines in unreduced form.
Use the longest ramp your space allows and follow your equipment’s owner manual. A rise over 30 inches needs a landing or platform.
