Enter your step or porch height and we'll recommend the right ramp length.
Measure from the ground to the top of the highest step or landing.
A 1:12 slope means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. The bigger the second number, the gentler the climb. Gentler is always safer, so verify local building code before installing.
| Slope | Incline | Safe use |
|---|---|---|
| 1:12 | ≈4.8° | Independent wheelchair use. The ADA standard. |
| 1:6 | ≈9.5° | Steepest acceptable for an occupied chair or scooter, and only with a qualified helper. |
| 1:4 | ≈14° | Unoccupied transport only, with no one riding. |
Read the ratio as rise to length: 1:4 means every inch of rise needs 4 inches of ramp, so it climbs three times faster than 1:12. Some manufacturers write these same two slopes as 2:12 and 3:12, which are identical inclines in unreduced form.
Use the longest ramp your space allows and follow your equipment’s owner manual. A rise over 30 inches needs a landing or platform.
The American Access Sidekick Solid is a single-piece portable aluminum ramp built for daily accessibility at home or on the go. Available in lengths from 2' to 6' with a 32" usable surface, this ramp can be set in place for portable use or anchored for permanent installation. With an 800 lb weight capacity, an extruded slip-resistant tread, and lightweight aluminum construction, the Sidekick Solid is built to handle small steps, raised landings, doorways, and vehicle loading.
Unlike folding ramps, the Sidekick Solid is a single rigid piece — there are no hinges across the deck and no folding seams to step over. The nylon carry handle makes it easy to lift and reposition for portable use, while anchor points let you fix the ramp in place for steps, sheds, or other locations where a permanent installation makes more sense. This makes the Sidekick Solid a versatile option for homeowners who want the flexibility to choose later.
Manufactured from high-grade aluminum, the Sidekick Solid is built for everyday use in all weather conditions. The aluminum frame keeps the ramp lightweight relative to its load capacity, and the extruded non-skid tread is part of the aluminum surface itself rather than a separate coating, so it won't peel, wear off, or require reapplication.
The Sidekick Solid features a non-skid surface designed to provide traction for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walkers, canes, and crutches in wet and dry conditions. The 800 lb weight capacity supports most power chairs, scooters, and an attendant.
The Sidekick Solid is a single rigid piece with a 32" usable surface — ideal for users who want a smooth deck with no center seam and don't need the ramp to fold down for travel. The Sidekick Folding is a bi-fold version with a 29" surface that collapses to half its length for easier transport and storage. If portability between locations is your top priority, the folding version may suit you better; if you primarily use the ramp at one location and want maximum deck width, the solid version is the better fit.
