When a ramp goes down at the same step every morning and comes up every night, a hinge is a part you pay for and never use. The PVI Solid is one welded piece of aluminum with no hinge, no fold and no lock: pick it up, set it on the step, roll over it. PVI makes it in 3 ft, 4 ft and 5 ft lengths, each in a 30 in or a 36 in width, at 15 lb for the smallest SL330 and 30 lb for the largest SL536.

Because it does not fold, a Solid ramp stores at its full length, 36 in to 60 in, so it suits a garage wall or a hallway corner better than a car trunk. It is also a short-rise ramp, with occupied-use rise ranges of 3 in to 6 in for the 3 ft models, 4 in to 8 in for the 4 ft and 5 in to 10 in for the 5 ft, within PVI's rule that an occupied chair or scooter never travels steeper than 2:12 and then only with an assistant. PVI's own page says the Solid is not meant to stand in for a modular system on a tall rise; for that, look at the PVI OnTrac or Modular XP.

Key Features

  • No hinge, no moving parts: The ramp is a single welded aluminum section, so there is nothing to unfold, align or lock before each use and no joint to wear with daily handling.
  • Two widths at every length: The SL330, SL430 and SL530 are 30 in wide for standard chairs and scooters; the SL336, SL436 and SL536 are 36 in wide for a wider surface under wider chairs.
  • 15 lb to 30 lb: PVI lists the 3 ft x 30 in ramp at 15 lb, the 4 ft x 30 in at 20 lb and the 5 ft x 36 in at 30 lb, light enough for one person to set and lift away each day.
  • Continuous platform: One flat deck across the full width takes small front casters, large drive wheels and scooters of different wheel spacing without lining anything up with a track.
  • Raised edges: A 1.5 in safety curb keeps a wheel from rolling off the deck.
  • Non-slip tape deck: PVI gives the surface of its portable ramps as high-tack adhesive-backed non-slip tape.
  • PVI rating 800 lb two axles: PVI lists every Solid model at 800 lb with two axles on the ramp and 400 lb on a single axle, and states testing at a 3X safety factor.

Who It Is For

A Solid ramp belongs where it will be used often at one place: the step from the garage into the house, a back porch, a shop or clinic side entrance with a single step, a classroom or sanctuary door with a raised sill. It suits a user or household that would rather lift one light piece into position than deal with a folding ramp, and mobility dealers who want a non-folding option to offer alongside the Multifold. Choose the 36 in width when the chair is wide; the 30 in width saves a few pounds and a little floor space. Like all PVI ramps it is made in Fairbury, Nebraska.

Dimensions

  • Lengths: 3 ft (36 in), 4 ft (48 in) and 5 ft (60 in)
  • Widths: 30 in (SL330, SL430, SL530) or 36 in (SL336, SL436, SL536)
  • Weight: 15 lb, 20 lb and 25 lb for the 30 in models; 18 lb, 23 lb and 30 lb for the 36 in models
  • Occupied-use rise: 3 in to 6 in (3 ft), 4 in to 8 in (4 ft), 5 in to 10 in (5 ft); the same range applies to both widths of a length
  • Does not fold: storage length equals ramp length

Measure from the ground up to the surface the top lip will rest on, then check that there is a flat stretch of ground at the bottom at least as long as the ramp, since a one-piece ramp cannot be shortened or angled around an obstacle.

Installation

There is nothing to assemble: the ramp arrives as one piece. PVI publishes a Solid instruction sheet (linked below).

  1. Lift the ramp into place with the top lip over the step edge and the full width of the lip bearing on the landing.
  2. Set the bottom edge on firm, level ground so the deck does not rock side to side.
  3. Compare the rise with the length: PVI recommends a 1:12 slope and allows no steeper than 2:12 for an occupied chair, with an assistant present.
  4. At a landing the ramp will use every day, anchor the top with the included steel security pins.
  5. Keep the tape surface swept and watch the included safety DVD before the first trip.

Diagram showing where to measure rise height for ramp selection

Measure from the ground to the top of the highest step or landing.

10"
Or enter exact rise: in.
Recommended length (ADA 1:12)
10 ft. ≈ 4.8° incline8.3% grade
ADA maximum running slope
Occupied (1:6)with helper5 ft.
Unoccupied (1:4)no rider4 ft.

A 1:12 slope means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. The bigger the second number, the gentler the climb. Gentler is always safer, so verify local building code before installing.

Why slope matters
SlopeInclineIntended Use
1:12≈4.8°Independent wheelchair use. The ADA standard.
1:6≈9.5°Steepest acceptable for an occupied chair or scooter, and only with a qualified helper.
1:4≈14°Unoccupied transport only, with no one riding.

Read the ratio as rise to length: 1:4 means every inch of rise needs 4 inches of ramp, so it climbs three times faster than 1:12. Some manufacturers write these same two slopes as 2:12 and 3:12, which are identical inclines in unreduced form.

Use the longest ramp your space allows and follow your equipment’s owner manual. A rise over 30 inches needs a landing or platform.
