Door thresholds are rarely the height a fixed ramp assumes, and a small mismatch is enough to catch a front caster or leave a lip at the top. The PVI Elev8 answers that with two leveling bases under the ramp that set its height to the threshold in front of it, so one ramp covers a range of rises instead of a single number: 1.625 in to 2.375 in on the 12 in model, up to 4 in to 6 in on the 48 in model.
This is a doorway ramp, not a step ramp. The adjustment range is the whole fit window, so a threshold outside the range needs a different length, and a rise above 6 in belongs to a portable or modular ramp. PVI lists it for doors that swing in or out. It has no side curb, which is what lets it sit against an outward-swinging door but also means there is no raised edge to guide a wheel.
Key Features
-
Adjustable leveling bases: Two bases under the deck, each with a hex nut and a pan screw, set the ramp to the threshold height, per the PVI instruction sheet.
-
Four fit ranges: The 12 in model covers 1.625 in to 2.375 in, the 24 in covers 2.375 in to 3.5 in, the 36 in covers 3 in to 6 in and the 48 in covers 4 in to 6 in.
-
In-swing or out-swing doors: The ramp aligns directly against the door and has no side curb, so the door can open over it in either direction.
-
Grooved aluminum deck: Grooves in the welded aluminum surface give casters and shoes grip at the point where small wheels most often catch.
-
Light enough to lift out: The 12 in x 32 in model weighs 6 lb and the heaviest, 48 in x 36 in, weighs 28 lb, so the ramp can be moved for cleaning or for a different door.
-
800 lb two-axle rating: PVI rates the Elev8 at 800 lb with two axles on the deck and 400 lb on a single axle.
-
Four-minute setup: PVI's instruction sheet estimates 2 minutes to fit the bases and 2 minutes to install, with no tools required unless you choose to anchor it.
Who It Is For
Front, back and garage-to-house doorways with a raised sill, and any other doorway with a raised threshold where the rise lands between 1.625 in and 6 in. The 32 in width is sized for 32 in doors and the 36 in width for 36 in doors. PVI lists it for wheelchairs and scooters with various wheel configurations, and mobility dealers use it to fit a customer's doorway without carrying a different fixed ramp for every rise.
Dimensions
- Lengths: 12 in, 24 in, 36 in and 48 in, each in a 32 in or 36 in width
- Threshold height range by length: 12 in model 1.625 in to 2.375 in; 24 in model 2.375 in to 3.5 in; 36 in model 3 in to 6 in; 48 in model 4 in to 6 in
- Weight: 6 lb and 8 lb (12 in), 12 lb and 14 lb (24 in), 19 lb and 21 lb (36 in), 26 lb and 28 lb (48 in), lighter figure for the 32 in width
Measure from the floor on the low side straight up to the top of the threshold, pick the length whose range brackets that number, and match the width to the door opening.
Installation
PVI's instruction sheet estimates 2 minutes to assemble and 2 minutes to install, with no tools required. A drill with a 3/16 in bit is listed as helpful if you anchor the ramp, and concrete screws are needed when anchoring into concrete.
- Fit the two leveling bases to the underside of the ramp with the hex nuts and flat head pan screws supplied.
- Set the ramp against the threshold with its top edge touching the door sill.
- Adjust the bases until the top edge meets the threshold flush and the ramp sits without rocking.
- To anchor, mark the base positions, drill 3/16 in pilot holes about 2 in deep (concrete screws for concrete) and fasten.
- Before each use, press the top edge firmly against the threshold and check that the deck is clear and dry.
