Recommended length (ADA 1:12)
10 ft. ≈ 4.8° incline8.3% grade
Safest for independent wheelchair use
Occupied (1:6)with helper5 ft.
Unoccupied (1:4)no rider4 ft.

A 1:12 slope means 12 inches of ramp for every inch of rise. The bigger the second number, the gentler the climb. Gentler is always safer, so verify local building code before installing.

Why slope matters
SlopeInclineSafe use
1:12≈4.8°Independent wheelchair use. The ADA standard.
1:6≈9.5°Steepest acceptable for an occupied chair or scooter, and only with a qualified helper.
1:4≈14°Unoccupied transport only, with no one riding.

Read the ratio as rise to length: 1:4 means every inch of rise needs 4 inches of ramp, so it climbs three times faster than 1:12. Some manufacturers write these same two slopes as 2:12 and 3:12, which are identical inclines in unreduced form.

Use the longest ramp your space allows and follow your equipment’s owner manual. A rise over 30 inches needs a landing or platform.

PVI Aluminum Threshold Ramp

The PVI Aluminum Threshold Ramp is a lightweight, surface-mounted ramp built for doorways that swing inward — front doors, back doors, garage entries, patio doors, and any single-step or threshold transition where a folding ramp is overkill but a rubber threshold isn't enough. Made from durable aluminum with a slip-resistant grippy surface, it bolts directly to your existing surface using the included hardware and pre-punched holes in the top corners.

This ramp covers the gap between rubber threshold ramps and full portable folding ramps. Where a rubber threshold ramp handles transitions up to 2", and a folding ramp starts to make sense at rises around 6"+, the aluminum threshold ramp covers the in-between range — rises from 1/4" up to 4" — with a permanent, anchored installation that won't shift, slide, or wear out.

The bariatric models share the same dimensions as their 36" standard counterparts but use heavier-gauge construction throughout for users with bariatric wheelchairs, heavy-duty mobility scooters, or any application where the extra capacity margin matters.

Key Features

  • Designed for inward-swinging doorways — sits flush against the inside threshold so the door clears the ramp on every swing
  • Pre-punched mounting holes in the top corners for fast surface-mount installation
  • Lightweight aluminum construction — weights from 3 lbs (8" model) to 21 lbs (24" bariatric)
  • Anti-slip, high-traction surface runs the full length of the ramp
  • Mounting hardware included for anchoring to wood, concrete, or other typical surfaces
  • Two width options — 32" fits standard wheelchairs and most mobility scooters; 36" provides extra clearance for wider chairs, easier alignment, and bariatric use
  • Bariatric variants offer 800 lb capacity for heavier-duty applications
  • Made in USA by Prairie View Industries
Choosing Length/Rise

The most important measurement is the vertical height of your threshold or step. Measure from the floor to the top of the threshold or step, then match to the ramp's rise range:

  • 8" length — handles 1/4" to 1/2" rise (low interior thresholds, sliding-door tracks)
  • 10" length — handles 1/2" to 3/4" rise (typical interior doorways)
  • 12" length — handles 3/4" to 1-1/2" rise (taller exterior thresholds)
  • 16" length — handles 1-1/2" to 2" rise (tall thresholds, low single steps)
  • 24" length — handles 2" to 4" rise (single steps, raised entries)

Longer ramps create gentler slopes for the same rise. If your threshold falls between two ranges, the longer ramp gives you a more comfortable slope and more margin for wheelchair clearance.

Standard vs. Bariatric

The standard models (THR/TH series) are rated to 600 lbs and built for everyday wheelchair, scooter, and walker use — the vast majority of residential applications.

The bariatric models (BAR series) share the same physical dimensions but use reinforced construction throughout for an 800 lb capacity. Choose bariatric if the user is bariatric, if you're using a heavy-duty mobility scooter or power wheelchair, or if you want the extra structural margin for high-traffic applications.

Aluminum vs. Rubber

PVI offers both aluminum and rubber threshold ramps. The differences come down to installation, feel, and aesthetics:

  • Aluminum anchors permanently with included hardware, holds up to higher capacity (especially the bariatric models), and matches better with finished interiors. Choose aluminum when the ramp will live in one spot and you want a secure, permanent installation.
  • Rubber sits in place under its own weight with no installation, no drilling, and no hardware. Has no load weight limit (the rubber transfers weight directly to the floor). Black only. Choose rubber when you want zero-installation, the doorway is a rental, or you don't want to drill into the threshold.

Both options are slip-resistant and weather-resistant. The choice usually comes down to whether you want a permanent installation (aluminum) or a no-install solution (rubber).
